It's about the craft, not the outcome. Just write.
writing is an art, it doesn't have to BE any more than that
I like to talk about writing as existing at the nexus of art and architecture.
Art… is a creative expression unique to your heart, mind, and lived experience. Architecture…because sometimes we impose a little form on the narrative; blend some intentionality into the craft.
My new book Elements, is called a CRAFTBOOK. (Sneak peek at the crafting of the craftbook below…) The reason is simple…it’s about writing, strengthening, and enhancing the writing. This isn’t a manual, a template, or a time-focused output guide that promises to make your book, story, essay, or tome-of-choice a bestseller, deliver it painlessly, or according to a precise list of steps. It is a book focused on diving into the soup of the craft with people who love to write…for writing’s sake.
I feel sad when I scroll through the socials and hear the shaming, ridiculing, and offers of guarantees. Doctors don’t do this. Sports coaches don’t do this. Why are people talking about the craft of writing doing this?
Writing is its own reward. Those of us who have journaled to feel better, written morning pages, or worked and reworked a story, essay or report know that will our time and energy applied to the content, it distills into clarity, and often, gold.
I want to be about the alchemy of watching the thought or memory, with layered and careful attention applied (one element at a time) become the thing of beauty we wished for. One sentence, paragraph, tale, or tome at a time.
It’s about the craft. Let’s not allow the pressure of society demanding we name a destination or outcome rob us of one of the gifts of being human.
Write on.
